Not so long ago, Mercedes-Benzes were divided into two - those with square headlamps and those with 'eyes'. Sure, it was the W212 that moved away from the slab-sided, square headlamp-ed '80s and ,90s designs. As with anything radical, the 'twin-eyed' Mercedes W201 fell between two worlds - traditional versus modern. So it was up to the new car, the W211, launched at the Geneva show in 2002, to establish the look.

mercedes-benz
mercedes-benz

If the w210 was an unloved Merceds, the w211 had to face an even tougher fate - a series of electrical problems and brake worries marred the reputation of the famed three-pointed star. It didn't help matters that the model was conceived and built at a time when bean counters were ruling Stuttgart. But hey, I loved the W 211 from the day I saw it star in MIB 2.

mercedes-benz
mercedes-benz

And the day I drove it for the first time (at the Pimpri facility of Tata Motors), I thought it was more involving than any Merceds before it. There was a lightness to the driving equation and the steering (no longer a worm-and -roller setup) was very direct and perfectly weighted. I have already seen the all-new W212 E-Class (with twin square headlamps - in a way Mercedes is going back to its roots), but I have to say that the current model looks gorgeous even today.

So it was a surprise when Mercedes-Benz India called to say that they were sending me a Special Edition series example for me to drive. The maroon E 280 CDI arrived promptly the next day and I had to give up the keys to a very nice Audi A6 - and I was pleasantly stunned to realise that the Mercedes steered and rode better than the award winning Audi. Sure it looked a bit 'traditional' next to the star from .

Ever wondered why every single model replacement is followed by one that is larger? Well, no matter what you do, packaging has its limitations, and the only way to get around it after a point is by pulling at the edges a bit. So if you flip the pages to the Which Car section, you will be surprised to find that the Hyundai i10 has actually gained nothing in terms to length and wheelbase over the santro, while the new kid on the block, the Suzuki Ritz, has instantly gained a couple of centimetres on the Wagon R in practically all areas. So has someone here forgotten the replacement formula, or does the current segment best, the i10, send another potential rival to the bottom of the hatch heap?

maruti suzuki ritz
maruti suzuki ritz

Well, number ok have something to say here. Hyundai sells a little under 8000 units a month of its wonder car, on an average. And we aren't even talking exports here! Which is precisely why Maruti Suzuki is looking to grab some part of that slice, with not one, but two cars. The A-Star has grabbed the collar of the base versions of the i10, while the Ritz takes on its Kappa engined variants. A seemingly simple comparison, then? Not quite Ideally, this would have been a Ritz-i20 comparison, but for forces prevailing at Maruti's senior management, who've managed to keep the introductory pricing so competitive that the i10 has appeared in its cross hairs.

maruti suzuki ritz
maruti suzuki ritz

But that has got nothing to do with the design here, right? Uh oh, it does, because you get more metal for your money. Longer than the i10, the Ritz can't hide its larger proportions, especially since the wider track and taller stance make the Ritz can't hide its larger proportions, expecially since the wider track and taller stance make the Ritz bulkier The overall design language might not excite, but Suzuki have left behind the Wagon R's boxy appearance for some curves. what instantly catches your eye is the swooping roofline, which defines the overall design.

maruti suzuki ritz
maruti suzuki ritz

Tall headlamps and a simple grille remind you of its utilitarian appeal, while the wide rear arches and neatly integrated tail lamps just bring in a slight hint of aggression. In contrast, the i10 is far more contemporary. When it was first launched a little less than two years ago, it looked like nothing on the road and even today the i10 stands out with its unique pear drop headlamps, its small mustachioed grille, the bonnet that pretends to have a 'power bump' and the sweeping C-pillar. You can't complain about the way it looks, even though some might find it too radical for their appetite.

It took me a 1,200 km ride on an Enfield 500 Machismo (See Instant Carma, BSM June 2009) to truly appreciate the seat of the Hunk. And the riding position, the effortlessness of the controls and so on. But the Huk does not give you the satisfaction you get when you ride a big old British single, tight? It has been an incredibly hot summer and .

hunk bike new model 2011
hunk bike new model 2011

I have not been riding in and around Thane much - that means the Hunkstays in the parking lot more often than not. On a regular basis, I exercise the Hunk's muscles (that sounds bad) with the short ride to the clubhouse and back. Ride quality suffers with a pillion and it is not comfortable on potholed roads.

hunk bike new model 2011
hunk bike new model 2011

And yes, Saif, my near sevenpfoot tall friend has been borrowing the machine occasionally and his feedback was that it is a more comfortable motorcycle around town than the Karizma. The starter motor whines a bit before latching on - an issue with every Hero Honda with a self-starter? The Hunk has been returning more than 45 kpl, though

hunk bike new model 2011
hunk bike new model 2011

I would like to test it on the open road with a more liberal right wrist. The rains are round the corner and ( can't wait to take the Hunk to our annual slush fest. Of course, a few short rides in and around Theane (one certainly to Malshej Ghat)is something that I am looking forward to! So far, so good then.

BMW believes a market exists for a 5 Series owner who wants the practicality of a hatch, without it being an estate, and yet offers the luxury of a saloon and the slightly high seating position of a crossover. Confused? Well, it could have been called the 5 Series All road if they'd slapped on on-off road tyres.

bmw m3

Instead they call it the 5 Series GT. It's based on the new 5 Series platform (saloon will debut in Sept) and among other features includes a bwin-door hatch like the Superb. As far as drive trains are concerned,

The 5 Series GT will be powered with three engines to begin with. The 535! will feature a bwin-turbo 3.0- litre straight six petrol engine with 306 bhp while the 550! will feature the x6 derived twin-turbo v8 with 407bhp. The 530d will be the only diesel option

was at a recent Honda launch event and at fr\irst it seemed that it would turn out to be the usual affair, with the Honda bigwigs talking about sales figures and speculations on how many motorcycles they will sell in the forthcoming years. And then, when I least Expected, it happened. THe lights suddenly dimmed and smoke billowed onto the stage From behind the haze emerged a stunning motorcycle, complete with leggy lasses and dudes with gelled air and helmets clasped in their hads standing around it.

stunner cbf

Ladies and gentlemen, lo and behold , the CBF Stunner PGM-FI,Honda's first small- capacity fuel-injected motorcycle in the country On stage, the CGF was flanked by the big Honda daddies themselves- the CBR1000rr Fireblade and the CB 1000r that were lanched in Mumbai at the same shindig, Now, if you were thinking taht the Stunner must have looked like a misfit with the other two, think again. The 125cc Honda managed to hold its own and that was inevitable, with the CBF sharing the same kind of colours and stage presence as the behemoths standing beside it.

stunner cbf
stunner cbf

The PGM-FI is virtually the same old Stunner looks-wise, and yet it looks nothing like it. Although the lines and the sharp edges are the same, the brilliant use of colour makes it seem like something different altogether. The deep hues of the CBR red and metallic silver look resplendent on the stunner, with the matte gold finish on the engine covers making the bike seem more like a smaller sibling of the 'Blade than just another hotted up commuter.

stunner cbf
stunner cbf

But the new Ttunner isn't just about colour or the look. It's the engine that is this Stunner's claim to fame. The motor is fed with a fuel injection unit and although the displacement of 124,7cc has remained the same, the power and torque have improved a wee bit- an increase of 0.6 bhp and0.02 kgm over the carbed Stunner add up to 11.6 bhp and 11.2 kgm respectively. This might seem too meagre to actually notice, but the new PGM-FI rolls to 60 kph from standstill in 6.2 seconds (0.2 second quicker) and top whack comes at 102 kph, with the engine building revs smoother on the whole.

Your spanking new Scorpio's parked in the backyard, freshly washed, glinting in the sunlight and begging to be taken for a ride. You succumb to its entreaties, pick up the keys and jump in, a tune on your lips. you settle into the driver's seat, adjust the mirrors. slip your favourite CD into the audio system, turn up the engine settles into a steady idle' you engage first and you're off. The Scorpio's running smoothly and the new-car smell hovers around your nostrils.

scorpio micro hybrid

You smile - everything's as it should be. In the distance, you see cars slowing down as the traffic signal turns from amber to red. You shed speed accordingly, downshifting until you come to a gentle halt, and you put the Scorpio into neural. Just over two seconds later, the engine cuts out automatically. 'whoal what's going on?! you wonder. Panic floods you, with visions of breakdown vans and irate motorists standing on their horns behind you. The it hits - you're driving the Scorpio Micro Hybrid.

scorpio micro hybrid

Relieved, and feeling sheepish at having forgotten you wait for the light to turn green, depress the clutch pedal and continue on your merry way. If you're wondering what that was all about, It's quite simple. In this, the latest iteration of their best-selling Scorpio, Mahindra have incorporated what they call a 'Fuelsmart system with Micro Hybrid technology'. Before you ask, the answer is no,there's no electric motor whirring away as a sidekick to the IC engine and yes, the name is therefore a bit misleading, perhaps even gimmicky. What is it, then? I essence, it's lke a rather simple cut-off switch. The technology, developed by M&M and Bosch, enables the vehicle to detech movement while you're driving.

scorpio micro hybrid
scorpio micro hybrid

When you've slowed down to a complete halt, and after you've engaged neutral, the system kicks in and cuts off the engine after 2 seconds. When you're good to go again, all you do is depress the clutch pedal and the engine starts up. The benefits of this feature are obvious, on the face of it. Te less time your engine spends running, the less fuel it consumes - that isn't exactly rocket science, is it? Additionally, when the engine's not running, it's not spewing noxious gases into the atmosphere - another plus. How does it work in the real world, though? The answer is 'well but not without drawbacks'. When you're waiting at a traffic light , it's all right to have the engine cut out for a couple of minutes and then re-start itself when you depress the clutch.
